Mix things up! Celebrity guests in the classroom

Time.  It is arguably the #1 constraint of secondary classroom teachers. The pressure of Regents Exams (NYS) and graduation goals are internal pressure points and what is typically (thanks to APPR) used to gauge success.   Research clearly shows more learning occurs with diverse, unique and engaging activities, such as small group instruction. One strategy to ensure students are being successful in teaching others and leading discussions in cooperative groups? Celebrity guests!  The key? create small group activities that a non-expert can guide for any class! My 10th graders LOVE having guests come in.

  • Counselors
  • Building and District Administration
  • Peers
  • Board of Education members
  • Retirees
  • Former students

It is a win-win for everyone! Some of the best experiences for my kids is to work with Principals, Supts, past Social Studies teachers and so many others in the classroom.  Students take tremendous pride in their content knowledge with guests – it is SUCH a self-esteem builder!

Guests in the classroom provide an invaluable learning strategy – give it a try!
